Linda's Birthday

Thursday, April 26th: I think it was Linda Ruf's birthday today. A handful of enthusiastic 4th-floor people gathered for this photo-taking moment.

Here are a few notable people who were also born on April 26: Tomoyuki Tanaka (co-creator of the 'Godzilla' movies), Jet Li (actor), Carol Burnett (comedian), and Roger Taylor (drummer for Duran Duran).

Fifty years ago, Louis St. Laurent was the prime minister of Canada, until he was replaced by John Diefenbaker in June. In the United States, Dwight Eisenhower was the president. Wham-O started selling the Frisbee. Dr. Seuss' "The Cat in the Hat" was published. And in October 1957 the first artificial satellite, Sputnik, was launched.

The Tunnel Boring Machine Disassembly

April 13, Friday: Two portable cranes started lifting up sections of the tunnel boring machine from the hole in the ground next to our office building on Granville and Pender.

This photo was taken at 8:51am:

The rest of these photos were after 1:30pm. Here's Gary Muker enjoying the view:

Here is the first section to be lifted up. This drill-head became visible at the mouth of the tunnel by our intersection around April 9th:

Chris Mortier's Birthday

April 4th, 3pm: Everyone on the 2nd floor, plus Linda Ruf and I, gathered by Chris's desk to sing "Happy Birthday" and joke around for a bit. Linda gave a little speech about what happened 40 years ago, including a mention that the first home microwave-oven came out at that time. I can't remember what else Linda said, though.
